The Lip-Smacking Influence of Irish Food

Contrary to popular belief, there is more to Irish Food than just potatoes and mutton! The culinary
delights of this country are steeped in history resulting in a mouth watering heritage that has always
been dependent on the rich ingredients the country has to offer. Generations of families have harnesses
and merged these bounties of the Irish land, sea, moors and pasturelands to create masterpieces that
have been carried down through generations. The kitchen is still considered the heart of the Irish family
and their hospitality speaks volumes of their love of the country and its people.

The Rise of the Potato

Irish food has had countless influences over the centuries. From the arrival of the Celts in 500 BC to the
invasion of the Vikings and England in the 16th and 17th century, the country was exposed to a
smorgasbord of delicacies which included meat mostly. However, at the time only the rich could afford
to feast on cattle while the poor were forced to survive on the leavings (ofal), cheese, butter and milk
along with barley and wheat for nourishment.
potatoes-Irish-Food
All of that changed when a game changing vegetable was introduced to the masses, the humble potato.
The vegetable arrived in Scotland in the mid 16th century. The damp and cool climate allowed it to
flourish in leaps and bounds and the potato climbed the gastronomic ranks from simple garden fare to a
staple ingredient in all kitchens and yes, even in stables. Since it cost next to nothing to grow and
cultivate, rich, poor and animal alike grew fat from it and adopted it as a welcome replacement for their
former (less savoury) diet.
However, the dependence on the potato also backfired for the Irish when the Potato Famine hit the
country. The famine was a result of the cold weather, but the one that spanned from 1845 – 49 was hit
by a disease which wiped out whole crops of the vegetable and also killed a million Irish folk. However,
the humble potato still remains a staple in Ireland and is served in almost every meal. Not even the skins
are spared since they make a tasty snack roasted or fried.

Irish Food Today

The influence of the potato is still present, but Irish cuisine has expanded to include other ingredients as
well. Like the rest of the United Kingdom, Ireland has retained its food culture but added modern twists
that could suit the palette of the modern day culinary connoisseur.
Steak-on-The-Stone-Irish-Food
This is why you can find a number of ethnic restaurants, fast food joints and even sports bars offering a
variety of gastronomic masterpieces that can suit almost any craving.  Recipes have been handed down
through generations, but the best diners, bars and restaurants use only locally produced, fresh
ingredients to create them.
If you are looking for mouth watering delicacies that were created using the finest ingredients, then
Trinity Bar Venue’s menu will not disappoint. Try our roasted potato skins for a blast from the past or
sample our succulent main courses that utilise the best the Irish land and sea have to offer.

Why Rugby fans are Going Crazy for RWC

With the Rugby World Cup edging closer and tickets arriving in mail boxes across the country, fans are
encouraged to plan their tours wisely and for good reason.  Ticket agents are advising their clients to
plan their trip to the tournament since the 44 day event is expected to experience a whopping 4.3
million commuters. Needless to say, transport networks and traffic control will have their work cut out
for them and the host cities will be busier than ever.
Rugby World Cup Ireland
All 13 venues that are hosting the tournament will have transport arrangements, but each will be
changed and added to according to existing services. To get ahead of the crush and keep that migraine
at bay, keep the following things in mind if you wish to watch the game live:
  •  If you don’t have a booked Blue Badge space, forget about parking anywhere near the stadiums.
  • Parking space will be on a first come, first serve basis.
  •  You can book park and walk or park and ride services but make sure to do so way in advance.  These will be snapped up quickly.
  •  Shuttle services will be provided
  •  Train services will be improved to accommodate the large crowds where possible with extra or longer trains. Some may even run later to accommodate late comers. Some roads might be closed around match venues.  Be prepared by looking up transport information on the official website of the RWC. Do so even if you are a regular in the city you are visiting.
  •  Take a look at the Spectator Journey Planner the RWC Organising Committee set up. This has been created to help fans find the best routes to match venues and Fanzones.

The Journey Plan also lists other travel options along with transport providers that can aid you in your
journey to the RWC come tournament time. You can even book a ride in advance from the link provided.
The initiative was taken by the Managing Director, Steve Brown, whose aim was to allow fans
opportunities to enjoy the games without hassle. Since the traffic will be much worse compared to
normal days, the good Director also urges them to plan their journey with the tools provided weeks
ahead so that they won’t get stuck.
Of course, not everyone will be able to make it to the stadium on time, but they will be able to get live
updates by following the game on the Twitter account @RWC2015Travel. The page will offer travel
updates as well across all of the 13 venues to aid fans in getting to the game on time.

Even if you do manage to get tickets, you will still have to manoeuvre through the massive crowd, which
will only hamper your enjoyment. However, that won’t be a problem if you arrange an intimate
gathering of friends at a sports bar in Dublin such as Trinity Bar Venue. Watch the World Cup on 20 large
HD displays, nibble on mouth watering delicacies and have a front row seat to the biggest event of the
season. What more can you ask for?

A History of the Rugby World Cup

Did you know that the Rugby World Cup is going to be in next year’s Olympics? The game has come a
long way from its humble beginnings and the recent news has only increased its popularity. Rugby
typically comprises of 2 forms, one comprises of 15 team members and is the preferred version while
the abridged version is 7 man strong. However, the abbreviated version will be featured in the Olympics
since a winner can be determined in 3 days.
However, even if you consider yourself a diehard fan, there are some fascinating historical facts of the
game you may not know. Let’s discuss the orthodox, 15 man game which started it all. Technically, a
single team comprises of 23 players and 15 are selected at a time to be on the field while 7 players sit on
the sidelines as reserves. The concept of the game came into being in 1823 when a football player,
William Webb Ellis, grabbed the ball and ran with it to score. Debates abound as to who was actually
responsible for creating the game, but his name has still gone down in the annals of sports history for
this quintessential contribution.
new10
Since the sport was originally played in the Rugby School that is based in England, the game came to be
known as rugby. Since it came into being, the sport has undergone several changes in regulations and a
number rules have been abolished to create the game as it is today. If you are interested, you can find
the official rulebook on the World Rugby website.
As the game continued to spread and grow after its origin, it quickly went international when teams
from England and Scotland faced off in the field in 1871. Later, Ireland and Wales played against each
other and in 1883, the Six nations competition came into being. Since the game emerged during the rule
of the British Empire, several nobles and members of the gentry would take up the sport. Several old
families in England can testify that they had famous rugby players as ancestors; in fact, several
descendants tend to take it up as well to uphold tradition.
new11
The 15 man game is held as a World Cup, i.e. after every 4 years and in 2015, we are going to witness
the 8th edition with England as hosts. Each game seems better than the last and the opening match this
year will be played between Fiji and England. The winner will be awarded with a gold cup that is over a
foot in height and the winners will also drink from it. This is an age old tradition that has been passed
down since the game originated.
If you want to know more about the glorious history of this glorious game, then sports bars such as
Trinity Bar Venue should be your new hangout. Besides watching the big game in HD and surround
sound, you will be able to rub elbows with people who live and breathe this game.

5 reasons why you should watch games in a Sports Bar

This is a never ending debate, but as technology gets better, sports fans in Ireland are gravitating more towards sports bars. Here are the top reasons why this is so:

1. Never Ending and Quality Booze

new7

This is a no brainer! Sports bars are stocked with an almost never ending supply of alcohol. Yes, some
stadiums can also boast the same, but the quality is subpar at most and some even water down their
beers to make them last longer. Do you really want to guzzle flat beer during the big game? Even with
adrenaline coursing through your veins, your palette will protest if it gets a taste of the former. Get the
buzz you deserve with draft beer from the best sports bars in Dublin and you won’t need to look
elsewhere.

2. Scrumptious and Fresh Food

The same can be said of the food. Yes, stadium fare may taste awesome when you are high on
adrenaline while watching the big game, but if you take the time to savour it, it won’t taste as good.
Lamb-Burger-Trinity-Bar
That’s because vendors typically cut corners when they have to accommodate large crowds. Most sports
bars, on the other hand, can beat stadium food quality wise by a mile. You should be able to get pizza
that is slow cooked in an actual oven, munch on crisp nachos in homemade sauce rather than the
industrial variety and dine on some of the best burgers in town. Thankfully, sports bars in Dublin are well
stocked with scrumptious options.

3. Never miss a kickoff again!

The pleasure of waiters will become apparent when you won’t have to leave your seat to get subpar
popcorn and beer. Not only can you miss the kickoff, but the food will get cold, the beer will grow tepid.
sports
It would be better to watch it at a sports bar that has quick service and hard working servers. You won’t
have to leave your seat for all of the full 8 hours then!

4. Park at your Convenience

Yes, it might be difficult to find a parking space in a sports bar, but compare that to the hours you’ll try
finding one around a stadium and you’ll prefer the former. Plus, if you decide that you want to watch
the game at a sports bar, then it will take you a couple of minutes to reach the nearest one. If you
decide on a stadium, you will need to plan a day ahead and clear your schedule.  Plus, a sports bar will
be the easier option and an easier sell when you are trying to convince your friends to go.

5. Variety

If you want to watch a different game down at the pub, then you don’t need to fight with the other
patrons for the remote. Just swivel your head to the other screens and watch it to your heart’s content.
Stadiums don’t have that luxury and they won’t give you the distraction the multiple screens at the bar
can if your team is getting massacred on the field.

If you are in search for a sports bar that meets all of the requirements, then make Trinity Bar Venue your
new watering hole. Besides live music and amazing food, we have the 10 best burgers in Dublin and over
